By searching the file, you should find two chains of this type: Supported Mac Models MacBookAir Macmini Macmini1 Macmini2.Then go to /Contents/MacOS/ and edit the file AppleUSBODD with Hex Fiend. Then go to /Contents/PlugIns/, right-click on AppleUSBODD.kext and choose 'Show package contents' on that file.Go to /System/Library/Extensions/, right-click on AppleStorageDrivers.kext and choose 'Show package contents.'.
We have to edit a driver file, as follows: I use Kext Utility (search for the correct version for your OS version), but it can be done by hand or with others.
The tests were carried out under OS X Lion, but should work on Leopard and Snow Leopard.Īs far as I know, the easiest way to check if the hack is possible is starting up the Mac while pressing the Option key with the drive connected if the player turns on, it should work.įor the modification itself, a file editor (I use Hex Fiend) and a tool that simplifies the update of. I could not test the handling on many machines I had a 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro (when working), a 2006 MacBook (which does not work) and a 2010 Mac mini on which the hack is unnecessary. But finally, I found it to be more practical than the other drives I tested. It also has two drawbacks: it is quite expensive and its USB cable is ridiculously short and non-removable. It also uses a slot-in, more convenient than fragile drawers, it can play a DVD without changing the DVD drive, as it is considered as 'Apple-supplied drive' by the system and responds to the Eject button on Apple keyboards. The first one is that it is quite nice-looking. From ridiculousfish.įirst of all, why use the Apple drive? There are several reasons.

Here's a link to my scrappy, undocumented spreadsheet, in case anyone wants to try this.A tutorial on how to run Hex Editor on a Mac with Crossover. This would be an easy programming job though.Ģ) backup the MEMORY1.RC0 file (for safety)ĥ) Find and replace each name string that should be changed in Hex Fiend (copying each string from the spreadsheet) Unfortunately, Excel has a size limit on text (so you can't load the whole RC0 file), otherwise it would have been easy to create a good looking editor where you could manage all the names in one go.
Then I use a simple hex editor (Hex Fiend in my case on a Mac) and do a manual find and replace for each name. What I've just done is to create a spreadsheet that will create the original hex string for each location as well as the new one that I want want. It would have been simple for Boss to write an editor, but they don't seem to have.
The names are stored in ROLAND/DATA/MEMORY1.RC0 (I assume MEMORY2.RC0 is the factory settings). Thanks for this! At least that’s half why better then before. I'm putting all this info together now and will post here when I'm done. That's why I'd like to just move stuff in the computer's OS instead.Įdit: uploading a file created on the device works in most cases, but not all. Not having to use an app is actually quite high on my list, because it means that the entire process of importing/exporting will fail eventually when Boss no longer supports the 500. I will make some more tests before my trial/return period is up and see how much it annoys me. Why that would be different than copying, I don't know. To rename a loop, you must do it on the device using an 80's arcade game style interface (which is terrible but still better than no naming option at all).įrom what I found so far, the only thing that works from the (Windows) Explorer or (Mac) Finder is dragging a file directly from one location to another. However, that ridiculous app will not let you either move things around, nor will it let you rename a loop. What does work is uploading a wave file using their under-featured program called Boss Tone Studio. Surprise: it says 'unsupported audio file'. I can export a loop that was created on the device itself and upload it back to another memory location. Try it to see if there is metadata in the file. I would have to import the file to Audacity and export out of Audacity while removing any data in the metadata(tags) dialog box that comes up before the save function continues.
Metadata is the info that tells the song name, album name, artist name etc. Not sure about Boss but my Akai MPX8 sample player requires no metadata in the file.
